What it means to be Kia'i

Kia'i translates to Protector in the Hawaiian language. It describes a person who has the kuleana or responsibilities of the protection and reservation of a person, place or thing. We see ourselves as ovwewhelmingly blessed to have been called to be stewards of this sacred Hawaiian land. We take that kuleana very seriously and aim to make all decisions for this farm with the care, protection and healing of this land in mind.

Mount Ka'ala

Our farm is located at the base of Mount Ka'ala on the Kaukonahua Stream. This glorious mountain is part of the Waianae Range, an eroded volcano of the west side of the island. Mount Ka'ala is the highest mountain on the island of Oahu with the elevation of 4025ft. This area is steeped in native Hawaiian legend. There are many endangered native species including plants, snails and spiders. Ka'ala means fragrant in the Hawaiian language.

Ka'ala is spectacular to behold. She watches over our little farm. And we gaze lovingly at her daily.

Waialua

Waialua is a "moku", a district with 8 ahupua'a within it. An Ahupua'a is a segment of land running from the mountain to the sea.

Waialua means 2 waters in Hawaiian. Waialua's name origin is uncertain but its suggested that it talks of the meeting place of the Anahulu and Helemano-Poamoho-Kaukonahua meet before they make their way to Kaika Bay.

We like to think of the meeting of the 2 waters talks of the meeting of the Poamohu and Kaukonahua meet, which is right at the point of the 40 acre of our little farm neighborhood.

We, the Yee's and Nicci Lee, purchased these 5 acres of land we steward, as a partnership. So we are also '2' who meet at a place with the '2' streams meet.

Kalo

Kalo is Taro. Waialua is known for its lush kalo fields.

It is one of the most important foods for Native Hawaiians. It much more than a staple food to us, it sacred, and has cultural significance. One of the legends associated with Kalo is- the first kalo plant grew out of the remains of Wakea and Papa's first still born child.

It's among the most nutritious foods in the world, and one of the easiest to digest. It's high in carbohydrates and potassium, calcium and iron. The leaves have many nutrients.

It's also one of the oldest cultivated crops in the world dating back over 50,000 years. It arrived along with Bananas, 'ulu, sugar cane and mountain apples with the Polynesians.
